Our workshop “Job Application in English (B2), Part 1: Creating effective application documents” addresses international students intending to apply for an internship or a job with a German company in English. It is part of a job application training consisting of two workshops and is complemented by the workshop “Job Application in English (B2), Part 2: Preparing for a job interview”.

Upon successful completion of the Zoom session and the e-learning units, participants will receive a certificate. In addition, the workshop can be credited for the “Ready, Study, Go” certificate program.

Requirements for participation

- You are an international student at TH Köln.
- You are prepared to actively engage in all class activities.
- Your English language skills are at level B2, proven by SLZ placement test (taken within the last two semesters) or by submission of a certificate (not older than two years).
- You have the necessary technical equipment to participate in the E-Learning units: PC/laptop with camera and microphone, stable internet connection, valid campusID.

This workshop is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. CEFR

Intended Learning Outcomes

After completion of the workshop participants can

  • understand even the finer details of job advertisements;
  • reflect on and discuss career plans;
  • design a job advertisement based on their ideas for their future employment;
  • create their own CVs;
  • write a cover letter or letter of motivation to apply for a job of their choice.

Further information

In this workshop you will take a close look at the recruitment processes in German companies and organizations. You will analyze typical job advertisements in order to not only understand the most important information, but also to ‚read between the lines‘ and grasp the fine details of what is required of applicants. By writing your own sample advertisements, which will later be used as a basis for your individual application, you will acquire structures and vocabulary to create effective application documents which will convince German recruiters of your aptitude and your competences.

During the e-learning stage you will write a tailormade cover letter / letter of motivation and create your individual CV. Your instructor’s sustained feedback will help you to improve your documents and to develop your own strategies in reviewing your texts. The workshop Job Application in English, Part 2: Preparing for a job interview will address the steps following the submission of your application documents.
